Bio-Chemical Nutrient Reduction

Proposed Wastewater Plant Upgrades:

BNR: Bio-Chemical Nutrient Reduction

Scope of the Project:  To reduce the amount of nitrogen discharged into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  This Project will encompass a major renovation to the Wastewater Treatment Facility in order to become compliant with the limits set forth by State and Federal Agencies.  Additionally, antiquated equipment will be updated and automated as part of the Project.  The design phase is currently underway by Gannett-Fleming Consulting Engineers.  Each design phase is then reviewed by the Authority staff to ensure that the designs are in the best interest of the Authority and its customers.

Construction of the first Phase will begin during the summer of 2011 with final completion of the entire upgrade slated for August 2013.

This Project will include the following upgrades to the Wastewater Treatment Facility:

1. The influent portion of the Wastewater Plant will receive new screening equipment in the order to reduce grit and debris in the wastewater stream to allow for more efficient treatment.

2. A new Primary Power Center, Switch Gear and 2KVA Generator will be installed, as well as new electrical support facilities throughout the Wastewater Facility.

3. The existing Aeration tanks will be retrofitted with a Bioreactor Diffused Aeration System, associated blowers, supply piping, isolation zones, mixers and media.

4. Pumping Stations will be fitted with new viable speed pumps, associated piping and upgraded electrical controls.

5. Two Final Clarifies will be retrofitted with new drive units, rakes and catwalks.

6. A new building will be constructed to house denitrification filters.

7. New Digester domes and a new building will be constructed to allow the reuse of methane gas in order to provide fuel for a new sludge drying and reduction process.

8. Upgrades and additions will be made to the Ultraviolet Disinfection System.

9. A new Process Management Control System will be installed and integrated in order to provide computerized control of the updated systems.

10. Energy efficient upgrades to current buildings and the addition of a new machanical maintenance / sewer system equipment garage will be provided as part of this expansion.
